Waiting for the UMC library to come into the 21st century? Our first manga, Japanese-style graphic novel, is on the shelves. In the fiction section [F FRI], "Pax Avalon: Conflict Revolution" by Steven Reece Friesen does not just rehash the same old conflict story with pictures, but animates an entirely different future that could exist if we only dared follow the heroic call of the cross. Come on young people, check this book out before the baby boomers do.
We've just signed our covenant agreement with Good News Theological Seminary and College in Ghana & Maple Grove Mennonite Church. The latest volume in the Global Mennonite History Series, "Anabaptist Songs in African Hearts," starts with the pre-Christian era, presents the pluses and minuses of missionaries coming to Africa, and discusses present-day Christian churches in dozens of African countries [289.76 CHE]. We've also added a Ghanaian map to the GNTSC notebook. Joel Weidner has done an excellent job posting updates on the Ghanaian project on the UMC website. You can view a country map, watch the covenant signing, and also download school newsletters.
Many of us experience what is called the "dark night of the soul," a time when we feel abandoned by God and feel dryness in our spiritual life. Addressed from a Mennonite perspective, Daniel P. Schrock's "The Dark Night: A Gift of God" [248.2 SCH] offers hope and understanding, distinguishing between clinical depression and a state of "acedia."
"Women's Book of Soul" by Sue P. Thoele [158.1 THO], "A Touch of His Presence" by Charles Stanley [1581.1 STA], and "Coming to the Table: A Bible Study in Psalms and the Gospel of Luke" by Melanie Zuercher [220.07 ZUE] can freshen your personal devotions and small group discussions.
Maybe you hanker for something light to hold and shorter articles to read. Then turn to two of our new periodicals. "Sojourners Magazine: September 2008" [magazine shelf] features articles on overcoming extreme poverty, a discussion of Kathleen Norris' new book on spiritual malaise (the dark night again), and student activists. The Summer 2009 issue of "Leader Magazine" [Leader binders] discusses personal preferences on hospitality, "good food" worship themes, and responses to individuals with eating problems.
Hard for me to believe, but some people don't want to read. So crank up the VCR and DVD player for "Two-Way Mission: North and South Americans in Conversation" by the Mennonite Mission Network or "God So Loved the World: Telling the Salvation Army as if the Earth Mattered" by Melvin D. Schmitt.
Working towards a complete collection, we continue to add volumes of the Believers Church Bible Commentary, a series suitable for teachers, members of Bible study groups, students, pastors, and seekers. They are quite readable. New additions include: "Exodus" by Waldemar Janzen [222.12 JAN], "Daniel" by Paul M. Lederach [224.5 LED], and "Revelation" by John R. Yeatts [228.07 YEA].
Remember, you can search the UMC library 24/7 online. Or ask a librarian for help.
