FEBRUARY 2009 IN THE UMC LIBRARY

Lent is fast approaching, and Mennonite Church USA has assembled "Reading for Radicals: A Peace and Justice Lectionary" for Lent Year B.  To encourage weekly study, why not print a personal copy by downloading the PDF file by clicking on the following link: Radical Lent PDF.

More into web-based materials than hard-copy books?  Then the "Cool Webs PDF" is for you.  It lists "hard core" Mennonite sites as well as light hearted ones like "Mennonite Girls Can Cook."  Make sure one of your internet stops is our own University Mennonite website: http://www.universitymennonite.org .  There are frequent updates to build our church community--and attract new attenders.  Too shy to outright invite somebody?  Then steer them to our website.

Click here to see a PDF file that lists new additions to the UMC library.  To augment the current adult Sunday school class on death, check out "Funerals: Consumers' Last Rights" [393 CON].  This detailed guide helps those who want to assume responsibility for making plans for their own disposition, but also helps survivors faced with an immediate need to make funeral arrangements. "Sojourners Magazine - February 2009" [magazine shelf] features articles on Eboo Patel and the spirit of the new Islam, biblical faith and economic collapse, and ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances in their own words.  "Leader Magazine - Spring 2009" [Leader Magazine binder] devotes itself to technology in the 21st century missional church.  UMC committee members should give it a close reading.

Did you know there are works by two members of the President's new Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships in the UMC library?  Eboo S. Patel, Founder & Executive Director, Interfaith Youth Corps, Chicago, IL; and, Rev. Jim Wallis, President & Executive Director, Sojourners, Washington, DC.  You can find Patel's biography in "Acts of Faith"  [3-5.69 PAT] and Wallis' work in "Sojourners Magazine" [magazine shelf].

Last, but not least, remember you can check the UMC library catalog 24/7 at our LibraryThing site: http://www.librarything.com/catalog/UnivMenno.

No matter what the format, happy reading!
